Oil on canvas  80x100 cm 2020

Chen San’s creations have always been inseparable from his original intention and practice. His creative concept originates from his understanding of the Madhyamaka Prasangika school, which is the idea of breaking down and establishing without clinging to any one dharma. “Prasangika” means breaking down according to the situation.

Within this philosophical framework, the pursuit of ultimate truth transcends observable phenomena, focusing instead on the intrinsic nature or essence (svabhāva) of all things. By looking past superficial appearance to investigate the underlying reality, the artist demonstrates a visionary perspective where creativity serves as an ongoing dialogue between the internal self and the external environment, ultimately resulting in transformation.

In this framework, “responding” (ying) denotes an intensive involvement with phenomena, characterising a mode of instantaneous and attentive artistry where physical and mental aspects operate in union. This process culminates in “becoming” (cheng), which is the realisation of a wide array of fluid and shifting forms. As a result, “Prāsaṅgika” signifies the creator’s engagement with the present, maintaining a balanced perspective of neither fixation nor indifference, while expressing a sincere commitment to the well-being of both humanity and the community.

In this context, “responding” (ying) signifies an active “engagement with phenomena,” representing a state of spontaneous, conscious artistry where the mind and body function as one. This process leads to “becoming” (cheng), the manifestation of ever-evolving forms and expressions. Consequently, “Prāsaṅgika” embodies the creator's relationship with the now, upholding a position of neither fixation nor apathy, while demonstrating a profound commitment to both society and the human condition.

A particularly remarkable feature of this exhibition is the integration of luminous gold into the ink paintings. This addition infuses the bold, untethered brushwork with a refined air of nobility and liberation. These pieces strike a balance between expansive grandeur and delicate clarity, appearing both evocative and strangely mysterious while maintaining a clean, spiritual freshness.

Leveraging the robust vitality developed through a lifelong dedication to calligraphy and seal engraving, Chen San constructs evocative environments where the horizon meets the water, snow rests upon verdant banks, and clouds blanket the wide plains. These settings possess a quietude that is nevertheless animated by a rhythmic cadence. The inherent tension within his art ensures that these quiet compositions vibrate with life the moment they are observed, offering the viewer a profound sense of emotional liberation and spiritual harmony.

In his oil paintings, one can sense an ever-surging vitality, a rising force of life that continuously unfolds. The colours are rich and intense, and the emotions sincere and powerful. Within the misty, moisture-laden interplay of light and shadow, one may occasionally detect a visual language akin to that of ink painting; yet upon closer observation, the works go beyond mere lyricism, or the inner passion seems almost to burst out of the canvas.

This is a bold and unrestrained expression of Chen San’s inner strength of character. To walk aline across a thousand mountains without regret, his work challenges each viewer to reflect on the danger of clinging to rigid frameworks. Over the years, Chen San has remained attentive to the shifts in the social and political landscape, while also critically reflecting on the nature of information. He uses himself as a long-term embodiment of society and culture. Even what appears to be a spontaneous, inspired brush stroke is not merely a casual expression of impulse, but the result of deeply internalised contemplation, ultimately rendered in the simplest visual form.
This solo exhibition brings together Chen San’s extensive observation of society, culture, and the rhythms of the world, turning them into simple, heartfelt images through his brush. Definitely something to look forward to!
