As a fresh beginning of the Year of the Snake, 2025, The In River Gallery is honored to present the solo exhibition “Snake in Yulong Mountain” by the artist Chen San.
Inspired by Mt. Yulong in Yunnan, a southwestern province of China, this exhibition seeks to strike a mental chord that resonates with the majesty of the snow-capped peaks. Snowflakes adorn the mountaintop year-round, while galloping clouds and swirling mists envelop its slopes, making it appear from afar like a Jade Dragon in motion. Descending from the vast blue sky, the Dragon mirrors the symbolic grandeur of the Snake.
Chen San’s improvised brushstrokes emanate deep emotions, transcending vibrant colors and capturing the beauty of unfathomable landscapes. Each stroke is a tribute to the wonders of nature. The ink paintings on display—such as Erlake, Road to Ethereal Mountain, Family Fun, and Peach Blossom—illuminate the human world with their languid yet ethereal hues, evoking a sense of joy while retaining a hopeful reverence for life. On the other hand, his oil paintings—Xingshan, Wangchuan, The Mysterious Realm of Erhai Lake, and Snow Land—compose an ode to life, dazzling viewers with their dreamlike beauty. In Chen San’s ink paintings, landscapes appear tranquil and enchanting from a distance, as though inviting us into a utopian world of their own. His oil paintings, rich in color, embed movement within stillness and stillness within motion—not only as a reflection of spiritual playfulness but also as a testament to his unwavering artistic will transcends time and space.
His eagles hover in the blue sky, soaring high up while traversing vast distances, their presence akin to that of heroic figures. Chen San records his passion for life and his relentless pursuit of ideals, unbound by age. His boundless freedom and open-mindedness surpass all forms, reminding us to embrace our own struggles with resilience and strength. Just as eagles ride the wind, we, too, can seize opportunities and find inspiration in their flight.
Viewers are invited to discover their own utopia within the works of Chen San—where art and personal reflection converge.
